S.T.E.M. toys

Discovering 21st century skills with Fisher-Price and Mayim Bialik.

When I was invited to a Fisher-Price event hosted by Mayim Bialik that was on a Tuesday I honestly didn’t think I would be able to go given my boy’s school schedules. When I heard it was to showcase Fisher-Price’s new S.T.E.M. toys (S.T.E.M. stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics) I knew I really wanted to go because I think the S.T.E.M. toys are awesome and just getting better all the time.

Amazingly, the timing worked out great! My boys were both in school unfortunately and couldn’t attend with me, but Fisher-Price still allowed me to go check out their new line of toys that aimed to inspire little learners to be big thinkers. The event showcased toys from Fisher-Price’s Think & Learn line. The two that I was very interested in were the Think & Learn Code-a-pillar™ and their Think & Learn Smart Scan Color Chameleon. I was impressed with both.

Think & Learn Code-a-pillar™ Price: $50.00

This unique caterpillar learning toy encourages kids to experiment as they play, helping them to develop problem-solving, planning & sequencing and critical thinking skills. Code-a-pillar™ inspires little learners to be big thinkers by encouraging preschoolers to arrange (and rearrange) the easy-to-connect segments in endless combinations, sending Code-a-pillar™ on his path. This learning toy encourages experimentation while developing important skills like problem solving, planning & sequencing and critical thinking. There’s no end to the combinations kids can make – mix up the segments and put them back together to send Code-a-pillar™ in a different direction every time!

Code-a-pillar™ is one of the new Think & Learn toys from Fisher-Price that goes beyond ABCs and 123s to help children learn how to think independently. Each toy fosters 21st century skills like curiosity, experimentation and problem solving in ways kids haven’t seen before. They’re engaged in hands-on, open-ended discovery that helps them become lifelong learners.

Think & Learn Smart Scan Color Chameleon Price: $25.00

This toy chameleon teaches preschoolers colors, counting in a fun, interactive way! This adorable toy Chameleon encourages preschoolers to explore the world of colors and numbers. Press the button on the Chameleon’s tail to scan one of the 10 paint splats and Chameleon will identify that color! Or, spread the paint splats on the floor, pick a play mode and be prompted to follow directions, sing, count, play games and more. Kids can even try scanning other items from around the room, like a book or a toy, to see what happens! My boys have been running around the house non-stop with this “colorful” friend!

There are 3 fun & interactive ways to play: Colors, Counting and Games. In Colors mode, the Chameleon encourages color hunts and other interactive play to help kids understand the difference between colors and identify each color by name. “That’s red! Now find the color blue!” In Numbers & Counting mode, as kids scan the numbered color splats, the Chameleon helps them count from 1-10. “Let’s go on a number hunt! I’ll tell you what number to look for! Ready? Show me the number 4!” The Chameleon can also help teach your preschooler how to sort and classify colors. In Games mode, kids will love trying to beat the clock as they play timed games like Follow the Lights and Counting Colors! “Find 5 blue objects in 10 seconds. Ready? Go.” In this mode, preschoolers are having lots of fun while they’re learning to listen & follow directions!

I was great to see other active parents, such as Mayim, getting down on the floor and engage the kids with these toys.

At home, I love how it makes my boys stop and think about what they are doing. I can see them working on their critical thinking skills while  developing coding and sequencing skills. I am thankful that kids today are utilizing all that the 21st century has to offer and helps develop communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking! For more information on what Fisher-Price is doing check out their Think & Learn area for more activities that can help extend the play!
